There is really nothing 'unfair' about it to the widow.  She can
take what she earned on her own record or take the higher amount.

How is that unfair to her?

That is how the 'insurance' aspect works.  She can take the survivor's
benefit.  Somebody had to pay for that extra amount she is getting.
If she doesn't want it, take the lower amount.  Her CHOICE.

I wish my employer would give me the option to take what I earned,
or take even more.
