Introduction and a Discussion on Values

The first online forum in the National Dialogue on Social Security will give you a place to introduce yourself to the group and to begin your introduction to the topic of Social Security reform. The approach that we will take is to focus first upon the fundamental values which we each believe to underlie the Social Security system. This will enable us to understand both our preconceptions about Social Security and our rooted expectations for the program.

In the course of this discussion we'll be learning more about the Social Security system itself - perhaps discovering some aspects of the program that may surprise us. Here are a few questions to consider along the way:

  • What is Social Security? Is it a pension plan? Is it disability insurance? What about benefits for the families of people who die prematurely?

  • What are your expectations for yourself and for others? Should Social Security be universal? Should coverage be optional? Should Social Security funds be locked into very specific allocations, or should they be available for more flexible application?

You can express your views on these and other issues by joining the online discussion or by completing the online survey that is offered in conjunction with the start of the National Dialogue. Please take the time to do both. Your active participation will make the National Dialogue a success!
