Sandra is correct in giving us all a reality check. Librarians all have a whole lot on their plate. My worklife is typical in that regard as I will briefly relate.
I work in a large urban public library with many librarians in subject departments. My department includes science, and the environment is one subject among several for which I am responsible. My workday includes working the reference desk about 50% of my time. The remainder is taken up with a variety of tasks including collection development, meetings, web projects, and planning for our new library. My work with our EE homepage and community outreach ends up being a small part of my work week.
We are lucky here in Seattle because the EPA Region 10 Library is only a few blocks away, and our own library has fairly good environmental resources. Nonetheless, to find time for training programs even in our resource-rich area is difficult.
One idea I have always liked is requiring librarians to earn continuing education credits to keep up their certification. Perhaps some states require that - Washington does not. If that were in place, training offered by the EPA or other agencies might be better attended.
