The biggest obstacle in reform is the 1974 Buckley vs. Valeo Supreme Court decision. Recently the controversial Supreme Court decision allowed the election of George W. Bush to stand due to the lack of time. But the unfairness of the conflicting standards regarding validity of votes in Florida was acknowledged. Obviously there was a weighing of values. An argument could certainly be made that the value of equal opportunity for election supersedes the value of unlimited freedom of speech. I greatly fear, however, that the present court would not rule in favor of limiting money spent on campaigns.
