- Topic: Emerging Modes
Adult educators are already working hard to bridge the digital divide and bring technology to traditionally undereserved communities. The adult division of the Los Angeles Unified School District is very proud of it's "Laptop Van" program implemented at several schools throughout our district. In this program, funded by CBET (Community Based English Tutoring) adult schools bring sets of wireless networked laptops to community-based branch locations on a regular basis using specially equipped cargo vans. The appearance of the van at a branch location site signals the transformation of the previously technology-bare classroom into a state-of-the-art multimedia technology lab in a matter of minutes. Students access ESL software and use common programs like Microsoft Word and Excel to complete language-based projects on a regular basis. The students at these sites not only use the technology for their own education, they are more equipped to understand the technology that their children are using in their k12 classrooms.
