Response to "Down as Well as Up": Yes, markets go up and down but
investing over your working lifetime is very safe. Readers who are
interested in reading more about why that is true can go to

The paper you will find there discusses the market in detail, and
it also shows how much the market would have to fall for individuals
of various ages and with various incomes to do worse with a private
account than they would with Social Security (see the Appendices).
In this discussion, let's not forget that Social Security has a $9
Trillion liability--I wouldn't exactly call that "dependable" or
"risk free".
