As a Republican, I am sensitive to distortions of fact and position in the
media. Unfortunately, some Democrats in the past have played on seniors'
fears, using demagoguery to political advantage. To keep the facts clear,
my colleagues and I will continue to explain--in our town meetings and
constituent newsletters--Social Security's complexities. We will speak on
the floor of the House, on C-SPAN, about our various reform plans. We will
appear on radio, television, and in print to inform the public and raise
support. We will use our internet web pages, as I have
(www.house.gov/archer/social_security/index.html), to enable citizens to
read the fine print for themselves. Ultimately though, Americans need to
take responsibility for educating themselves on these important issues by
reading newspapers frequently, discussing them with their peers, and by
being involved in the political process.
