RE: Citizen Question

The purpose of this online forum is to present and discuss various alternatives for solving the fundamental problems of the Social Security system.

A number of participants have criticized both the President's plan and the Archer-Shaw plan because neither is a permanent solution which would leave future generations with a perpetually self-prefunded system for retirement security.

Your question, then, does the country a disservice because it presupposes that the solution which will come out of all of this should and will be a compromise between those two plans. That would not be in the country's best interest, so you should not try to steer the Congress down that road.

Specific legislation has already been introduced, which would provide an excellent starting point for a bill which would address the fundamental problems. Please review H.R. 2929 of the 105th Congress, introduced November 8, 1997 by Rep. John Porter and which was immediately referred to the Ways and Means Committee for study. You can find the text of the bill at:

Such already-introduced legislation should certainly be included in bipartisan discussions aimed at a true solution and not a band-aid approach.
