Question on Safety Net

The 15 seniors in my library discussion group agree Social Security
is the safety net of not only low-income retirees but middle class
retirees as well.  They are very committed to the idea of keeping
the safety net in place for those whose income would drop below
the poverty level it it weren't for social security payments.
They are especially mindful of women who stay at home to raise 
children or work at lower income jobs.
