If you had quoted the entire passage you would have seen that my argument was suggesting that the decision for one parent to stay at home with the kids is available only to the relatively "well off".
Further, using my immediate friends as an example, I suggested that their relative wealth and education allows them to cut back as much as possible and squeak by on one income. Survive they will, but, saving for the college education of their 2 children will be a stretch.
I decried in the second posting the fact that this option is only available to those relatively high wage earners and not to the average person. Indeed, living in a major city, trying to save for a downpayment, sending your kids to college, working,etc. these are all part of the american dream. Yet, we all do not have an equal opportunity to access it.
SOME people can choose to eliminate extras and live on one spouse's income; the majority of people cannot. That was my point.
