Subject: RE: Danger in Small/Rural Libraries Being Proactive?
Can any reasonable person doubt that business interests might use their dominance of rural area governments to "lean" on librarians who provide information that is contrary to their interests? That manipulation of library budgets can be an effective weapon is proven by the actions of powerful members of Congress who can dictate the career paths of federal agency leaders.
Rural area librarians must work hard to be neutral in presenting information but their integrity may well be put to the test by subtle hints from influential members of the community. They need to network for help in walking the right path because the public is too often unaware of the pressures that may be exerted upon them. The ones who feel pressured need direct support from those of this forum, hopefully by programs that develop from these discussions.
