It is not only time to make changes in our campaign finance reform laws, it is beyond time. The electoral system is discredited, and, up to now, Congress has been ineffective in planning to reform campaign financing. However, I see some progress on the horizon, and I truly hope the legislators have the strength to see real reform through. The system we have now leaves our legislators beholden to special interests, those interests that have the money and donate heavily. The effects of skyrocketing campaign costs are clear and alarming. Qualified challengers are deterred from running, reducing competition. Candidates are lured toward special interest contributions that have strings attached. This is not the way I would want the American electoral process to work.
