It seems to me that democracy, and indeed our entire political system, is based on one prime tenet: that all persons have a fair and equal chance. However, if political campaigns turn into a question of who has the most money to burn, or who can cater to the wealthiest interests, then this egalitarian goal is no longer a possibility. I think that, while fund-raising may well be an integral and immutable part of politics, interests and opinions which are subject to influence of a donor or group of donors -- that is, the subtle ways which money can change a candidate -- should be prevented. Also, the defeat of the McCain-Feingold bill seems to perpetuate a system in which incumbants are practically guaranteed another victory; I think that more efforts like that of Senator McCain to control the money flowing into political campaigns, or at the very least supporting full disclosure and honesty concerning campaign contributions, are in order.
