I don't think that limiting the amount of money that an individual can donate to a campaign/party is unconstitutional. In fact, it gives an equal opportunity for each individual to have a voice and contribute money. It's almost like one person, one vote: one person, $1000. However, I do think that the cap of $1000 needs to be re-evaluated. Within the McCain-Feingold bill, there are no provisions to change this amount. I agree with Bush's proposal to adjust the number for inflation. $1000 in 1974 is not worth more than $1000 today.
Free public airtime to candidates is the point that I support the most out of Choice 1. Advertising and getting your name out seems to win the election every time. At least it seems that way to me. I want issues and debates not glossy pictures and subtle barbs at rivals. If the candidates are given air time, they will have to put something substantial out there like a clearly defined platform and goals (something that I feel was lacking from the last election... what was compassionate conservatism really??). Candidates must be identified by their issues and I feel that public advertising through major stations is a clear step towards that goal.
