At the post-secondary level in professional education programs, it is becoming more and more common to invite recent practitioners to join the faculty on a full-time basis for a year or two, while they are on leave from their districts. In addition, most programs do have a number of part-time practitoners regularly serving as adjunct faculty. They teach courses, supervise students and provide valuable input into curriculum development and revision. Many also serve on candidate selection panels.

Being "full-time faculty" is different from being a "permanent/tenure track faculty " As noted above, colleges and universities do hire full-time, as well as part-time temporary faculty members. There are benefits in doing so as noted in Recommendation 10.

The demands and requirements for appointment, retention, tenure and promotion are quite different for permanent/tenure track faculty, in contrast to full-time temporay faculty. To achieve increased practitioner involvement on a full-time or part-time basis doesn't necessarily require their being appointed as permanent/tenure track faculty. Having temporary status could be beneficial if the desire is to truly have the time to focus on teaching and service to students.

It appears that the desire is to have more practitioners involved in the education of future professional educators,to provide more consistent support to students, and to reduce the number of temporary part-time faculty who must teach as several institutions to make a reasonable salary. This is currently possible, albeit embraced in varying degrees across institutions of higher education.

Whether more full-time temporary faculty or permament/tenure track faculty are needed is institution specific and can be influenced by many factors.
