I agree that providing teachers time to collegially learn their craft is critical. A career ladder should promote the concept that there is a professional body of knowledge and skills that will increase the probability of one being successful with students. It is also vital to get away from this notion that to advance in this career that one must move away from actually teaching. To me, it should be obvious that if we continue to encourage this practice, we will always be denying our students the benefits of being taught by the very best in our profession because we will constantly be encouraging people to move out of the classroom.
