I do think that it is quite likely that some form of Social
Security legislation will be passed this year -- I'll rate the
chances on your scale as a solid 7.
Ideally, Congress will pass legislation that mandates progressive
savings accounts as a part of Social Security rather than as an
add-on option. This will require tough choices but will
ultimately create a pre funded, economically solvent system which
opens savings and wealth to all working Americans.
Given the current political climate, any successful legislation
will have to be a bipartisan effort. The president's idea for
Universal Savings Accounts in addition to Social Security is
gaining momentum, and will probably serve as the basis for
bipartisan reform.
I look forward to the coming months, and am hopeful that
Americans will continue to speak up and let their representatives
know that the Social Security debate is alive and well.
