There is no security in the current system. Demographics, if nothing else, will force it to renege on its promises.

On the other hand, privately owned personal retirement accounts permit all workers to actually save and accumulate wealth, unlike the prodigal sons in Congress would have us do. 

The nature of the investments should, because of their long-term goal, be quite conservative but similar to existing 401(k) and IRA plans. Such a powerful wealth accumulation technique should be available to all workers, not just the few who can afford extra investments.
