Subject: How can the Internet be used more effectively?
The Internet opens up so many opportunities for EPA to communicate more effectively and quickly with our clients. Here are a few suggestions: 1) Place documents on the web page so that anyone can download them free of charge. 2) Establish a sign up so that the EPA web site can automatically notify people if they are interested in being notified when something of interest has been placed on the web site (e.g. Alaska Airlines notifies people who subscribe when special air fares are available). Have links directly to state and local agencies so that if people are looking for information in their community it can send them there. 4) Establish a "chat room" so that interested people can go into it to comment on proposed rules, programs, issues, etc.. Sometimes, chat rooms can stimulate some good ideas. Of course, it would have to be a little more structured to ensure comments are constructive and directed. 5) Place maps on the web site both GIS and NASA Remote Sensing maps. Allow people to download these and/or build their own map with those as the foundation and then with overlays can track sensitive lands (e.g. wetlands, etc..), utilities, point sources, etc..
There is so much we can do with our web site .. It is limitless. But, it is imperative that the web site be kept current and that it is seen as a dynamic and evolving tool that should be updated daily.
