Velma Smith

Velma Smith is a special consultant to the Tallahassee-based Legal Environmental Assistance Foundation. Prior to working with LEAF, she worked for Friends of the Earth for more than 10 years, initially as Director of their Groundwater Protection Project and eventually as Executive Director.

She holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Georgia and a Master's in Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia. She served as legislative assistant on environmental and energy issues for Congressman Rick Boucher of Virginia, and worked on farmland protection, land use and water quality issues for the Piedmont Environmental Council in Warrenton, Virginia. Smith served as a member of the Virginia State Water Control Board for six years, and has served on a variety of EPA advisory groups, including the National Drinking Water Advisory Committee.
