The networks did offer air time at a greatly reduced rate and aired the ads at 2:00 AM! The politicians complained, naturally.

The political ads provide nothing more than campaign promises (empty), double-speak (nothing to do with First Amendment Rights), distorted facts, 'what the public wants to hear' written by campaign speech writers and out-right lies.

Garden-variety voters, of which I am included, need correct information we can rely on to be better informed in order to vote. I am more inclined to pay attention to debates and am turned off by political advertising and opponent bashing. If I wanted to view clever (award winning ads) and gladiator spectaculars, I'd take in a hot ice hockey game.

Free or reduced air time for debates instead of hot air ads.

Direct-to-consumer and direct-to-voter advertising has a very powerful and often an undesirable influence.
