Opponents of campaign finance reform limitations on the amount of money that can be donated by an individual argue that these policies infringe on citizen's First Amendment Rights to free speech because these donations of money are considered forms of symbolic speech. This is true. However, it is more than justified under the principle of providing for the common good. In the American system, citizens enter into a social contract with their government in which they sacrifice some of their individual rights in order to provide for the commmon good.
