Exactly the problem!

In fact, the original post-Watergate funding reforms were successfully (in part) challenged in court, NOT by traditional Dems/Reps, but by former Senators James Buckley (NY, Conservative Party)and Eugene McCarthy (WI, ex-Democrat), who saw the reforms for what they really were, protections for incumbents and against third parties.
