Current technology can just as easily be put to use for the governmental offices as it is for corporate boardrooms. Video conferencing, extensive security measures, e-mail, etc., could all be implemented to allow closer contact between constituents and government representatives. Much of it is already in use, just not as extensively as it could be. Debate and voting electronically are no less viable.
An official who is actually in his or her home state is much more likely to be accessible to even the poorest of the citizenry than when they are thousands of miles away. And then, just think of the tremendous savings simply in eliminating the need for so much extra travel, additional living quarters, additional staff, moving families repeatedly, and so on.
