Although the regulation of individual contributions to political candidates can be seen as an infringement on the freedom of speech in the First Ammendment, it is necessary to maintain equality. Unregulated individual contributions would allow upper-class candidates with connections to wealthy individuals to have an extreme advantage over lower- or middle-class candidates who don't who don't have these same connections. Less than 1% or the population contribute more than $250 to their candidates; allowing this small minority of wealthy individuals to make unregulated contributions to candidates would give a majority of the power and influence to a few individuals. Regulating individual contributions allows every individual an equal oppurtunity to voice their opinion on an equal level.
