hi to all,

our dilemma re: campaign finance reform seems pretty straightforward. we want a political system where each citizen has the chance to have a significant voice in important decisions. we want a government "of, by, and for" the people. furthermore, we like the idea of "one person, one vote" because that idea of political equality helps to ensure that decisions will be made by the majority.

how can we create this political equality (hopefully a very active political equality) in a system in which there is profound economic inequality? not to mention racial, educational, etc. inequality.

how can we make the political system embody principles at odds with much of the rest of the most important institutions in our society? an earlier writer used the phrase "public servants, not corporate servants" - but in reality much of our society is almost completely dominated by corporations - from the malls, to the tvs, to the cars we drive, to the stocks we worry about, etc.

i think we can come up with ways to limit the power of corporations in our government. but first we must agree that our political system is for the people, not for the corporations.

(i also think we should also consider why we want to limit the power of corporations, and maybe even think about limiting corporate power in other ways as well but that's a different topic.)

for hope,
andy
