Quick Comments Results: Sept. 28

What was your personal goal for participating in the Dialogue? Did you accomplish your goal? Please Explain.:

  • To learn about public participation issues with the EPA. Yes.
  • Yes, I learned even more about how I might use the EPA website more effectively. I never realized how helpful and interested the library community is with regard to providing environmental information. They are certainly a first source of information in my community.
  • By participating in the Dialogue, I wanted to see if other agencies and the public are truly serious in getting information out to everyone. I feel that there are numerous individuals out there that are concerned about the lack of information to people living in rural areas, especially.
  • 1. Chance to raise concerns about environmental information issues gleaned from personal experience when trying to obtain water quality data which impact my local township. 2. Share ideas on expanding environmental information with other individuals from all backgrounds and organizations inside and outside the government. 3. Offer and share ideas on environmental information with other library and information professionals.
  • As a library trustee and active environmentalist, I hoped to learn more about ways in which libraries can be more effective in providing "user friendly", reliable information to the public. The dialogue has been useful. While unable to participate every day, I have retained each summary and will share insights with colleagues.
  • Decide whether partnering with libraries will benefit EPA and libraries; explore what libraries and communities would want from such a partnership to determine what role(s) EPA might play and whether other partners woudl also be needed. Uncover other related capacity to participate in environmental decision making barriers and seek solutions. Test the technology of "dialogue" as a public participation tool. Find new people to involve and consult with on related matters. I'd say that the goals were accomplished.
  • To move the discussion forward in a meaningful way towards action that makes more information readily available through libraries.
  • From the user's perspective, I was mainly interested in the process through which EPA information could be made more accessible and therefore more useful. I found the diaglogue stimulating; but two weeks is not enough time to solve such large challenges.
  • I wanted to know how and what people see in libraries as a resource tool for communities. I wanted to know who is using what types of information and for what purposes. I wanted to share my expertise and ideas with others. I wanted to learn. I did it all! and then some... I have gained a clearer image of the need for environmental information systems that will put data and information in to the hands of those in need in the formats they find the most useful. I see a greater need for resources that cut across disciplines of learning and lines of work. I see a need to provide effective, efficient, economic and equitable information services, products, and resources. I see hope.
  • I wanted to see how EPA was proposing to network with public libraries on the distribution of environmental information. Additionally, I was interested in what kind of information participants felt was relevant. Although at the end of this Dialogue, I have no idea how EPA plans to assist libraries, I did find everyone's ideas and comments most interesting. I hope EPA plans more of these environmental e-forums on other topics. It certainly qualifies as stakeholder participation. As someone pointed out, EPA's open meetings are during working hours and in the Washington area, which leads to attendance by employees of polluting industry and their lobbyists, but little chance for the real stakeholders, the American public being impacted by environmental pollutants, to attend. Stakeholder dialogue via the Internet provides equal access and participation to those who can't fly to Washington on a week day. It's especially pertinant to issues of ADA access.
  • My personal goal was a hope to learn something that I could use(knowledge..information..contacts)which would enable me to serve my community better, while it is faced with 3 companies seeking permits from the NYSDEC/U.S.EPA...two title v's and one article x. Did I accomplish my goal..yes and then some.
  • My personal goal was to learn more about what's going on nationwide in the area of environmental information and what sorts of partnerships have been forged. Yes I accomplished my goal, but was sorry I had less time to really devote to the dialogue and even to be able to read every posting. I hope the results of the dialogue, action items, and list of particiapants and contact info are provided to each of us. It would be nice to have a print summary document to keep archivally. I am really interested in entering a pilot project between my local community and EPA as Pat queried. I really hope there will be a follow-up on this. Thanks for the opportunity and kudos for a job well done.
  • My goals were: To let a wider audience than I might generally encounter know about the work of the Mohawk Valley Library Association in its two-year project: "Resources for Economic Viability in Sustainable Agriculture." To see waht the EPA is doing and what that agency hopes to do in future as far as connecting with libraries is concerned. To explore the possibility of future partnerships for MVLA with EPA / other government agencies / other non-profits / educational institutions & etc. -- especially under an umbrella of the concept of "Sustainability."
  • I wanted to see what was being said that might be helpful in moving forward with our wildfire conservation education program. We deal with smoke management issues and other issues that relate to some of EPA's roles. We also are concerned about how information flows (or doesn't.) Unfortunately I was only in the office part of the time so was not able to contribute to the conversation. However, some of the things we're sensing were confirmed by participants, particlarly the difficulty many people have in getting information from the web. I think the dialogue is a great way to share information and appreciate your efforts in doing this.
  • My goal was to learn what information was available, and get an idea what libraries are and can do to provide information to communities. I think that this goal was met. There is room for improvement, but I figured this would be the case.
  • To get raw data on line. Don't know. We'll see if the data goes (back) online.
  • GOAL - Assist in making information relating to local issues more accessible Accomplishment? - Hopeful something tangible will result. I don't expect access to interpretation of data, but data (i.e., information) only. I don't think it is the job of librarians to interpret information. Neither can they be expected to always disseminate information on all sides of an issue - all information they receive is filtered prior to their dissemination.
