  • X-topic: Local Issues/Superfund

One thing that I have tried to keep in mind when dealing with various citizen's groups in the ten states covered by the Great Plains - Rocky Mountain Hazardous Substance Research Center is the varying background of the individual groups. Members of one group, living near a former defense site in a major metropolitan area, had a great deal of technical knowledge. Another, in a rural ranching area, knew a lot about the business of ranching, but did not have a lot of background in such things as environmental chemistry. Still another represented a Native American community in which cultural differences needed to be respected. That is why I believe that it is important to get to know a community beyond simply flying in and attending formal meetings.
