Even after 5 years - till a very nice little primer on what is an ecosystem and how does it work -- see appendix C or EPA's "Community-Based Environmental Protection: A Resource Book for Protecting Communities and Ecosystems" (EPA-230-B-96-003) - download from: http://www.epa.gov/cbep/pdf/fnlappen.pdf
The CBEP resource book went through 9 printings (10,000 copies) and we have just retired it from print, although the national small flows clearinghouse ( http://www.nesc.wvu.edu/nsfc/ ) is still printing it.
