Fred Stoss asked, "Does the EPA have a good, scientifically-based primer on the basic concepts of environmental science?"

One of the tasks of the Great Plains - Rocky Mountain Hazardous Substance Research Center TOSC program (funded by EPA's Office of Research and Development) has been to write and publish on-line a series of environmental science and technology briefs for citizens. They include a brief on the scientific method and tips for reading technical reports (by Wendy Griswold of our center), and another that explains the steps in risk assessment and the various ways in which risk can be measured (by Terrie Boguski of our center). I myself have just written a citizen's brief on the subject of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that will appear shortly. These and other articles can be found at the following website:
