I agree that experts and expertise are needed to solve problems. This implies that the "public" being unsophiticated does not have a valuable message for us when addressing environmental problems. On the contrary, I think that traditional knowledge (be it from native peoples or long-time residents of an area) should play a role as we develop policies or attempt to regulate situations.
