  • X-topic: Information

In response to Linda Tashbook's comments about the impracticality of local agencies' training librarians re. environmental content & EPA procedures, I'd like to clarify that my original suggestion was to have EPA undertake regular and ongoing training of local librarians through their professional associations at the state, regional and national levels.

It seems to me the ultimate goal over several years is for thousands of local librarians to be skilled in accessing this information and knowing how to make it available to their local constituents. A limited number of repositories is fine for reaching the activists and professionals, but not necessarily the unorganized citizens who may be directly affected by emergent environmental problems. Such persons, of course, are very likely to live near and utilize their local library.

Since our Libraries Build Sustainable Communities project has reached close to 800 librarians through our state and regional workshops this past year, I think this outreach is a realistic goal.

It seems EPA Regional Offices could play an active role in arranging and conducting such training, too.
