"Texts aligned with our standards are wonderful but the state should also be supporting the purchase of supplemental teaching materials selected by districts to enhance learning," writes Virginia Strom-Martin.

I hope the members of the legislature will think about this when they vote on appropriations. According to figures that I've seen, $150 million has been set aside for textbooks, and only $31 million for library books for schools. Most children would prefer to read real books, I think. In addition, studies, including one by Susan Neumann, who works for Rod Paige, have shown that access to real books is key to reading achievement. Mrs. Bush is also stumping for more accessibility to books through libraries.
