It is time to free some of the restrictions on class size reduction so as to allow for two classrooms of 30 students with three teachers. The third teacher could have the responsibility of being the much needed safety net for the kids who are not getting it. An assemblywoman from San Diego argued for that kind of flexibility in implementing class size reduction, but Governor Wilson wanted to insure accountability and we are still following his rules. It is time to "allow" this kind of an innovation if we actually want to fulfill various of the Master Plan's recomendations: adequate learning support services; qualified and inspiring teachers in the classrooms; affordability. This is a pretty simple solution compared to some of the other Gordian knots in the discussions; it won't need one single additional penny from an "innovations fund"
