We must test and we must do it better if we are to fix the problems in California's educational system. (I am speaking specifically about grades 9-12.) You cannot tell what is being produced without testing - good, appropriate testing, with intelligent interpretation. Teachers sometimes fear testing because they believe that the work "accountability" refers only to them. The reasons students do not do well is more often than not something outside the classroom. Appropriate testing will tell us not only which students are not succeeding but will also point us in a direction to locate the problem. You see - pretesting is just as important as posttesting.
