There are some problems with the unification of school districts that should be kept in mind. CTA will insist that every teacher in the unified district be paid on the same salary schedule. The salary schedule in unified districts is lower than those for high only districts. This is the reason that unified school districts have a difficult (or impossible) time hiring calculus and physics teachers. My unified school district has an assistant superintendant for curriculum who was a first grade teacher. She knows elementary curriculum very well but nothing about high school curriculum. Her assistant was an elementary school principal. There are tremendous problems when these people try to deal with secondard science and math curricula.
