I work at a large inner city school that is over-populated and
struggling. Many teachers are beyond burn-out. What we
need is an influx of young, idealistic, energetic teachers with
a common vision of turning this campus upside down. High
salary is not enough. Somehow, like firefighters or U.S.
marines, our teachers must be encouraged to have a
passion for what they do. I cannot imagine a firefighter not
saving anyone because he or she did not get a raise. Nor
will a marine refuse to go to war because his working
conditions are less than perfect. While Mr. Parsons is
correct in identifying the poor conditions in which we work,
something must be done to build PRIDE in our profession.
