Gwyneth, regarding your comment about Kindergarten: although I am not a native CA (Tx) I remember kinder fondly. naps were included because young children are active and need a rest although this isnt something etched in stone. BUT I do want to remind us that simply being wired to learn does not mean a formal academic program for young children. They are wired to learn from an experiences. There should be learning/exploration centers, a language rich environment where stories are told, games are played, and ideas explored. I think we have pushed down the overt academic form of schooling into these children and young child scholars oppose it.
