Current Staff and Recent Project Associates:
- Barbara Brandon
- Policy Analyst.
Barbara is a lawyer with a JD from the University of Pittsburgh School
of Law and an LLM from Harvard Law School. She has practiced
environmental law at both the federal and state levels for the United
States Department of Justice, the Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection and a large national law firm. She has also
taught law at the University of Kentucky College of Law and as an
adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
Currently she is a law librarian at the University of Miami Law School.
- Bob Carlitz
- Executive Director. Bob is a graduate of Duke University
and California Institute of Technology, with BS and PhD degrees in
physics. In addition to his work in theoretical physics Bob has
initiated a number of local, regional and national networking
activities. Since 1989 he has moderated the KIDSPHERE mailing list.
He was a founding member of the board of directors for the
Consortium for School Networking. He has served as project director
for Common Knowledge: Pittsburgh and Bridging the Urban Landscape
and is the founding director of Information Renaissance.
- Barry Chad
- Asst. Head, Pennsylvania Dept., Carnegie Library of
Pittsburgh.Barry has worked in libraries since 1981.
He has an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh's School of Library
and Information Science. His interest is in adapting Web
technology to library use.
- Ethel Parris Gainer
- Community Development Specialist.
Ethel is a graduate of University of Pittsburgh with a BA in
Speech Communication and English; she also holds an MEd in Education,
Communication and Technology and an MSW from the University of
Pittsburgh. She has worked previously in community organizing
and government.
- Rosemary Gunn
- National Projects Manager. Rosemary is a graduate of
the University of Southern California and completed the course
work for a Master's Degree in International Relations and
Management at Webster University. A communications specialist,
she has worked on development cooperation at the Royal Tropical
Institute in Amsterdam; as a university program administrator
in Minnesota; as a consultant to city governments and agencies;
and with many community organizations.
- Gene Hastings
- Technical Director. Gene is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon
University's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has been
working in networking and telecommunications since 1981. He has been
involved in Internet infrastructure and planning since the ARPANET and
early NSFNET and has server as a member of the Board of the Federation
of American Research Networks. Prior to joining Information Renaissance
Gene was a senior staff member of the networking group at the Pittsburgh
Supercomputing Center.
- Laurie Maak
- Special Projects Coordinator. Laurie is a graduate of
the University of New Mexico, where she received a BA in
psychology; she also holds an MA degree in educational psychology
from the University of Georgia. Currently she is working on
online dialogues in education in California.
- Marsha Perrott
- Smartbuilding Project Manager.
Marsha is a graduate of Allegheny College with a BS degree in Biology. She
has been involved with Local Area Networks since 1984. Marsha worked for
PREPnet, Pennsylvania's first Internet provider, during the Internet's
formative years and more recently served as Exchange Administrator for the
City of Pittsburgh.
- Paul Reilly
- Systems Administrator. Paul has an MS in
numerical general relativity from the University of
Pittsburgh and is a graduate of Carnegie
Mellon University. He administered Unix systems, acted as webmaster,
and wrote Perl scripts for Information Renaissance.
Currently he is teaching physics and the University of Pittsburgh.

Ashley Schannauer
- Telecommunications Policy Analyst. Ashley is a graduate
of the Dickinson School of Law and received a M.A. in economics from
the University of Pittsburgh. He has experience in telecommunications
and public utility law with the City of Pittsburgh Department of Law
and the Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate. He has also
represented the City and community groups in environmental
matters.
