Upgrading Windows 3.1 to Windows for Workgroups 3.11

Note: While an actual part of the Windows for Workgroups 3.11 installation procedure, the last step of this guide is continued on a separate link. If you do want to set-up Windows to use your Ethernet network card, continue with installing Windows using the instructions on the next page (after you have finished the instructions on this page) by following the link at the bottom of the page. Also, be sure that you have an ethernet card installed and configured. If you do not wish to set-up a network card, then you can select not to install any networking options and continue with the Windows installation. However, if you do this, you will not be able to use any Internet applications.


  1. Once you are at the "C:\>" prompt, insert Disk #1 of Windows for Workgroups 3.11 into the floppy drive and type "A:\setup.exe"

  2. At the Windows for Workgroups Welcome screen, press Return (or Enter) to continue

  3. Select the Express Setup by pressing Return

  4. Press Return if Windows 3.1 is installed in the "c:\windows" directory, otherwise, enter the path of the Windows directory and press Return to continue

  5. Press Return to upgrade Windows 3.1 to Windows for Workgroups 3.11

  6. When prompted, insert Disk #2 amd press Return to continue

  7. At the Windows setup, enter your School name (i.e. Allderdice) in the "Your Full Name" field and "PPS" in the "Company Name" field, then press Continue button twice

  8. Insert Disks #3, #4, #5, and #6 (and possibly #7 and #8) when prompted

  9. Select and install your printer (if you have one and are prompted to do so)

  10. Press Continue at "Network Setup"

  11. At the "Exit Windows Setup" prompt, remove any disks in the floppy drive and click on Restart Computer

  12. At this point, you most likely are in the situation where you are ready to continue with the overall reinstallation process and install the network drivers and settings. Click here to Installing the Network Drivers & Settings.
