Walter Heart makes some good points, but the statistics can be very
misleading:  1) he quotes statistics on MEDIAN income; the statistics
on MEAN income are not as grim;

2) when you read the notes to the statistics and the definitions,
you realize that "income" excludes a lot of things, such as food
stamps, help in various forms, it even excludes tax refunds!  So,
let us be careful in reaching conclusions on the basis of these
statistics.
