Similarity between the SS problem vs the Y2K problem

I was watching Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut on C-Span during a hearing on the Y2K problem, who was saying that the role of the politician is 90% to educate and 10% to legislate.
I was struck by a similarity between the Y2K problem and SS. In both cases there is a time of reckoning: in the case of Y2K it is very well defined: December 31st, 1999. In the case of Social Security it is not so well defined, but most people tend to agree that 2013 is going to be the first time that the absence of change to SS will be felt in an obvious manner.
The SS problem is also similar to the Y2K problem in the sense that education is a crucial component of the solution.
