TRI stands for Toxic Release Inventory. The Toxic Release Inventory is a database of large polluter's reports of how much of each toxic chemical they release to the air, water, and land, the size and destination of toxic chemical shipments, and how much of each toxic chemical they generate in waste. It has been around since 1987, and was the first database that was legislatively mandated to be provided to the public by electronic means. Because of its inherent usefulness, and because of its legislatively mandated availability, it is the most commonly discussed database when issues of public access come up.
