I think the attitude of the public is like a "catch 22" situation. Once the people have decided they have no voice and quit paying attention, then it is difficult to get their attention to explain that they NEED to get involved. We are seeing the rights of the working people steadily being eroded but the good economy tended to make everyone feel safe. When the economy slows down and people realize they've been "had" it will be too late to change!
