I am a longtime member of the League of Women Voters and also Common Cause. I have never been a candidate but have worked for many candidates. I have seen the power of money and special interests and have concluded that the only answer is public financing. And there has to be a formula worked out to help challengers. We can't limit our choices to only the rich. Shorter campaign periods would lower amounts of dollars needed as would free TV time. "Safe" legislative districts force challengers to raise and spend obscene amounts of money which the incumbent has not trouble matching. There is no other way to unseat an incumbent in a safe district.
