Boy, Nancy, can I relate! While my experience is not from a Union perspective, it is from a corporate PAC. My introduction to this form of political influence was a semi-strong arm attempt to compell me to contribute money so the PAC could influence legislators to be favorable to the phone company. It was supposed to be "volunteer", but took on overtones of "join or lose your job" mentality. I elected not to participate, but watched who the PAC supported. Often both Democrates and Republicans were awarded the same amount of money. Equally often these same candidates had positions I couldn't support on issues that I felt were more important than phone company issues. I have been suspect of PACs ever since.
