  • X-topic: Information

Mark F. Bohne said on July 13 that he has "been a proponent of compact disk copies to reduce the space taken by the reference materials." He also mentioned a lot of space used to store RAB records before the cleanup had even begun.

The EPA Regional Superfund Records Managers are imaging the Administrative Records for Superfund sites and providing CDs to the libraries that maintain the Administrative Records in Superfund Information Repositories, when possible. All of the Regions are working to place an index of each Administrative Record on the Regional Web site. Anna Butch of Region 3 in Philadelphia has a sample of creating PDF documents from the images with links from the index (for one site) so that all documents in that Administrative Record are available on the Internet (see North Penn Area 6 at http://www.epa.gov/reg3hwmd/super/nopenn6/arre1041.htm ). How does this work for anyone?

My guess is that further search capability of those Internet-accessible documents is the next step. With the links from the Index to the PDF documents, it still is sorta like pulling the paper copy off the library shelf and browsing through it - but at least anyone can get it and, for some, in the comfort of their homes without having to travel to the library. On a CD, some cross document searching may be possible. Do others have ideas on next steps?
