I don't mean to promote a conspiracy theory here, but wasn't this the location of the solvent laden wells and vinyl chloride poisoning cover-ups that was talked about in Bill Moyers' "Trade Secrets" report?

I thought too that there were several superfund sites in the area.

If I understand you, you are saying that the people in Calcasieu Parish are not willing to go the EPA with their concerns regarding the environment they have to live in because the local industry may retaliate?

In this case the public really would not want to be involved in the policy process. I suppose the only way around this problem is to have some sort of external spokesperson that the community agrees to have represent their opinions.

By the way, I have been there and I am aware of the problems you mention. Presently my 'significant other' works down the road in Orange, Texas. I know how much influence the petrochemical industry has over the people who work for them and the local community that depends on their generosity.
