Hi, I'm Janet from Grand Junction CO. Last year I finished my dissertation where I researched how citizens were making a difference in environmental affairs. I studied 2 very diverse groups in Arizona (where I lived at that time): one was an environmental justice group attempting to stop the toxic poinsonings in urban areas and the other was trying conserve the resources on the Colorado Plateau.

Currently I am associated with AmericaSpeaks, a DC based organization dedicated to providing methods for the citizen's deliberated opinions be heard by elected officials on national issues. I also volunteer with a local group--The Civic Forum--who work to create the civic infrastructure for local voices to be heard by City Hall.

I'm here because I'm scared about 2 things. First, about the deteriation of our civic fiber. Citizens, such as me,are disociated from their government and feel powerless. Second, the silent voices of the majority of the citizens are contributing to the deteriation of our life support system.

My hopes for this process. That we make a difference--that we widen the possibilities for citizens to be meaningfully engaged in their governance.
