Hi, Nabil Al-Hadithy from Berkeley. I serve as secretary to a citizens commission on the environment as well as manage the Cal/EPA certified office within the city (Ch 6.11 Div 20, Cal HSC).

My secretarial work for the commission brings me face to face with 2 real problems. First - trust - in some environmental groups in our community there is none. There is lack of trust in public agencies such as EPA and DoE as well as the science used to protect public health and the environment. Second - expectations - many commissions and public groups do not accept added risks that EPA feels "acceptable". Hence, the latest discussions here in Berkeley have centered around the precautionary principle and public notifications.

I am interested in the communication of risks to the public and what happens in the case of total rejection even for the smallest calculated risks.
